Sunday May 13, Altea, 8:00 in the morning. The starting shot sounds and starts the first scoring event for the Open Water World Tour…
More than 750 swimmers met this weekend in Altea on the occasion of the Mediterranean Coast Challenge to participate in this amazing event. The MCC had 4 different distances (10km / 5.5km / 2km / 500m) with the longest race giving the swimmers the most points for the OWWT Ranking.
This race, the Mediterranean Pro, was dominated at all times by the Basque Xabier Gordoa, who since the initial start imposed a demanding rhythm with which he was taking down the rest of his rivals, and with a final change he picked up the last swimmer who followed him closely. Xabier completed the 10km in 2h34 ‘.
Sea conditions added an extra hardness to the race. Currents, moved sea and a temperature to the limit of 18º.
In the female category the winner of the race was Andrea Fos. The Valencian swimmer dominated, with great solvency, the race from start to finish and gave no opportunity to their rivals, with a finish time of 2h57’.
With these results, Xabier Gordoa and Andrea Fos become the first leaders of the Open Water World Tour 2018.
It was a sensational day for the great atmosphere. We must also highlight the Mediterranean race (5.5km) that belonged to the Open Water Swimming Spain Cup.
The next OWWT event will be the 17th of June in Monate, Italy. This event belongs to the Italian Open Water Tour and where both winners of the Altea’s race will be able to defend their leadership.
